What Driveway Installation Involves
We start with the base, not the pour. The existing driveway is removed, the sub-base is excavated and graded, and a layer of compacted crushed stone is set down before any concrete is placed. Concrete is then formed, poured, finished, and left to cure. Most residential driveways are 4 inches thick — sites with heavier vehicle use may call for 5 or 6 inches. Finish options include standard broom, brushed texture, or exposed aggregate. The pour typically takes one to two days on a standard residential driveway, followed by a curing period before vehicle use.
When You Need a New Driveway
Your driveway likely needs replacement if it has wide recurring cracks, sections that have settled and collect standing water, or crumbling edges that get worse each winter. Driveways with 20 or more years of wear and multiple problem areas are usually better replaced than patched — the sub-base is often the root cause, and surface patches don't fix base failure. Isolated shallow cracks in an otherwise sound slab can sometimes be repaired instead.
What Affects the Cost
Driveway size is the main cost driver. Removal of the existing slab adds cost, as does limited site access — narrow side yards or close fencing require more hand work. If the base has settled significantly or drainage needs correction, that scope is included in the estimate. We provide free estimates after seeing the site.
When to Call Someone Else
If you need a very fast turnaround, this isn't the right fit. We schedule in advance and won't cut short curing time. We also focus on residential and small commercial work — large commercial paving projects are better handled by a contractor who specializes in that scale.
We serve Bloomfield and surrounding Essex County towns including Montclair, Glen Ridge, Nutley, Belleville, and Newark.
